Poll: Who Won The 1st Republican Presidential Debate?

The first presidential debate was held this evening in Greenville, SC.  Despite the fact that many of the candidates with the most baggage media-presumed favorites were not in attendance, it was still a lively debate.

Its worth mentioning that, 18 months before election day 2008, nobody knew who Barack Obama was either.

Our question to our readers, who do you think won the debate?

  1. Was it EVER refreshing to see some Real People rather than the usual suspects (i.e.: pre-selected establishment types). I'm a Ron Paul fan but I thought all of the candidates gave very thoughtful answers and answers that actually came from some sort of principles and good old fashioned common sense.

Herman Cain was a big surprise; I disagree strongly with some his positions but boy howdy, who wouldn't like to see him debate obummer head to head? He sure is strong, non-apologetic and articulate. He'd eat the TOTUS for lunch!

    1. Wow! Rarely are we graced with a Ron Paul'er that is polite and has etiquette. Couldn't agree with you more about Cain.

      1. Well, thank you and I'm sorry you've encountered some ill-mannered RP supporters. Still, don't let that cloud your opinion of Ron Paul or, most importantly, the message.

For me, it's all about the central bank, the Federal Reserve, and our debt based monetary system. Once I understood all this, thanks to Ron Paul curing my apathy, all the rest is basically noise. For example, why argue for tax cuts when the Fed, through devaluation of the dollar, is stealthy stealing far more than taxes do. We're living the effects rather "grandly" right now and it's all being blamed on speculators. But speculators have been there all the time; they're doing what any rational person would do: flee from the dollar and move into hard commodities–something that actually has value.

If you're not familiar with how our money works and the theory of economics that Ron Paul espouses, here are some good places to start:
"The Money Mystery" and "Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?" by Richard Maybury
        Any of Ron Paul's books
"Economics in One Lesson" by Henry Hazlitt (free on the web)
"That Which is Seen and That Which is Not Seen" (essay-free on the web) by Frederic Bastiat
        mises.org
        fee.org

        1. Ron Paul got me reading about the Fed… long story short, I'm pissed.. lol.. I didn't get to finish watch the Republican debate last night so I don't know who won and the news this morning isn't talking about it. Who won?

          1. You're all learning about the Fed, eh? Here's a new factoid for you, Herman Cain is a former Federal Reserve branch Chairman, and has repeatedly told his audience that it is absurd to call for an audit of the fed. Dangerous guy.

          2. Ron Paul won clearly. You should re watch the debate and decide for yourself. The media picked Herman Cain as their winner though. Just as they tried to downplay Ron Paul last election, they are trying again. Watch the focus group after the election. They have 29 hand picked Cain fans declaring him the winner with seemingly pre scripted responses. Ron Paul is anti-establishment. Therefore even the right media fears him.

    2. Herman Cain's articulate, but a former KC Federal Reservist – ie not to be trusted

  2. I liked Cain, but on the other hand Ron Paul has the consistency that Cain can't match. 20 plus years of defending our constitution, even if he was the only one standing up for it. I can't support someone who has no political background and no track record to look at. Ron Paul makes his statements from the heart, follows the constitution and laws of this country and has the vote to prove it. I truly believe Ron Paul, if he won, would not get to the white house and all of the sudden flip flop on issues. Issues he has stood firm on for 20 plus years.

    1. I take it term limits isn't one of those things he's been fighting for?

    2. I think Cain and Paul both were very good but I'm with Brian on this one. I liked Cain but Ron Paul has a proven background.

    3. Cain worked for the Fed… I don't think I can support him..

    4. Ron Paul is the only won telling the truth. Does anyone really believe Rick when says the war in Iraq is about freeing the people?? It makes me sick that people can lie like that. What else is he lieing about. Ron Paul DEFINITELY for president. Heres a true American citizen who wants to see the country grow, NOT his pocket!!

  3. Cain won and it wasn't close. Ron Paul was shaky, appearing very unnerved. Not presidential timber. Great guy for the Senate, though.

    1. No more shaky than the senior Bush. Its time to quit being suckered by actors.

      1. Who cares if he was shaking!???! So tired of that crap. You go ahead and worry about how he delivers a speech while the rest of us focus on the words coming out. If we would have had tv for the last couple of centuries there some of our finest Pres would have never been elected ie Lincoln… Lets use our heads here.

    2. If physical charisma is your prime motivator for voting, you probably shouldn't vote. Listen to the words and the logic. Hitler was a fantastic speaker with great charisma. Obama is a great speaker with great charisma. See where your charisma based voting record gets you. Ron Paul had clear, honest, and to the point answers. Herman Cain failed to give opinion on any foreign policy issue. His point is that he would listen to the experts. Well Obama and Bush have been listening to the experts and look where we are. Ron Paul has had a clearly defined, philosophically correct, constitutional view of foreign policy that has remained consistent for over 30 years.

  4. Ron Paul hands down. Who knows what a guy like Cain would do once he gets in office, im curious where Cain would get funds for his campaign..Out of his pocket??

  5. Cain and Ron Paul won. Cain was better at quick replies, but he had no specific responses. Ron Paul seems to understand how complex the issues are, but it's impossible to give a one sentence soundbite that people like. Gary Johnson seems to understand the business and is at least an honest politician. The other two guys were empty suits.

    1. Your view of Santorum and Pawlenty are on the mark I think. I like Gary Johnson but I understand how most don't take him seriously so I can even discount him. After that I think Ron Paul was the clear winner. Herman Cain had no clear answers. His view was simply that he would figure out a better way. Well Ron Paul has already figured out a better way. Fox news picked Herman Cain to win. Watch the focus group after the debate. 29 pre picked Herman Cain fans in one room with pre scripted responses. It was a travesty and showed how shameless the mass media have become on propping up their interests. That was not honest reporting. That's why even fox news has fallen from my graces.

  6. Ron Paul winning?????????? ROTFLMAO!!!!! The dude is D A N G E R O U S!!!!!

    1. I would like you to explain dangerous also. Your response has no substance. It is a useless waste of web space as it stands.

    2. Not knowing what you are talking about is also dangerous.

  7. H E R M A N A T O R!!!!!!

  8. Let's see NObama get 98% of the black vote if he has to run against Herman Cain! Add to that how many whites voted for him just because he is black, but won't this time, and I see a TROUNCING that will make his mid-term "shellacking" look like a close election. I knew almost nothing about Cain until tonight, but I would say he won by a mile! Ron Paul will never win over the independent voters needed to win in the general election. He is WAY to far right, and in my opinion, to scary.

    1. Herman Cain is further right than Ron Paul. I don't really get your comment at all. You should go reassess the views of both candidates.

  9. I first heard Herman Cain speak on the Tea Party Express Tour in Green Bay WI last summer. I thought at the time, "This man should run for president. He could easily defeat Obama on the issues and no chance of the race card being played." We need fresh faces in politics. The status quo has to go. They are all in bed with each other no matter what they say. The position is called President of the United States, not Ruler of the World. We need someone who cares about this country and can begin to fix it's ills, not contribute to them. I think Herman Cain could be that man. I also like Alan West, but he's not up for discussion here.

    1. Even using the word race in an election is ridiculous. If one of your criteria is race related, you shouldn't vote. I know your just bringing up the strategy of how others vote, but It's the wrong territory in my opinion. Primary issue with Herman Cain: 1.No foreign policy. His answers on foreign policy issues were to ask the experts. That would put him exactly where Obama and Bush were on foreign policy. Bad idea.
      2. Has supported the federal reserve system and even opposed auditing the fed.

But I will say that he was far superior to Pawlenty and Santorum.

  10. Cain worked for the Federal Reserve as well as said we have NO NEED to Audit the Fed. A definite NO for us being that it is the Fed that has DESTROYED our country!!

    Ron Paul 2012

"Choose Paul for the Long Haul"

    1. Oh yeah, Cain did for the Fed didn't he?… Well, that should be a negative against him…

      1. I rkecon you are quite dead on with that.

    2. I concur.

  11. Ron Paul 2012 BABY!!!! "I don't want a gay man telling me the definition of marriage, so why should I tell a gay man?" —- LET'S DO THIS RONNIE!!!

    1. Ron Paul 2012 =)

  12. Paul supporters give it up. Ron Paul has some strong points but his bad points are very bad and too scary to ever win in a primary or general election. Paul supporters you are wasting your time! I am saying this and I voted for Ron Paul as a libertarian back in 88 and 92 before most of you were even born.

As a former Ron Paul voter from years ago I think you should consider Cain or Romney.

    1. CNN poll shows Ron Paul as primary contender for Obama. If Ron Paul gains the republican nomination he resonates better with independents and can get more democrats. Needless to say he will get the republican votes if he gets the nomination. Ron Paul can win. The media does not want you to think so. The mainstream media, even fox does a hack job on Ron Paul. Just today Ron Paul was beating Cain so bad on fox news poll that they made a new poll. The exact same poll. They just remade it. They selected a 29 person focus group after the debate with handpicked Cain supporters with pre-made answers. Hannity's snide remark "Ron Paul decided to go a tea party rally instead of talking to me, I don't know why but he did". The reason why is because everytime Ron Paul talks to Hannity, Hannity simply brings up the time he was hit with snowballs by Ron Paul supporters. A waste of time.

    2. Wish you would explain "bad points" and "scary". All my voting life (which has been a while, lol), I've voted for people who claimed to be limited government types, and they turned out to be wolves in sheep's clothing. I'm done with that.

Ron Paul understands the rule of law, the damage the Fed does to us and he's consistent. I know what I'm getting even if I don't totally agree with him. No one has the voting record he has.

Besides, it's never a waste of time to defend liberty!

    3. I'm sorry you seem to be have everything mixed up. More often than not it's the more educated people that understand what really going on. You can pretend all you want but at some point reality is going to slap you in the face.

  13. Ron Paul has some good points but all in all he is too much of a nut job to be President. His loyal followers are out of touch with reality also. They will be for someone else once they get off the weed, get jobs and grow up a little. The reason why Ron Paul does so well in the polls is because his followers are obsessed with polls and chat rooms. Everyone is on to the game his followers play. We all know Ron Paul gets about 10% at most at anytime.

    1. Is that all the ammo you have against Ron Paul?

I'm quite grown up (mid-50s), I don't smoke weed and I have 3 jobs. I am quite in touch with reality. Of all the RP supporters I know, and I know a LOT of them, from people like my parents in their mid-80s down to my 14 year old son, very few smoke pot or do any other drugs. In fact, the War on (some) Drugs is not their primary issue and I actually know a couple of supporters who do not agree that the WoD should be completely ended.

If there's any one thing you can say about RP supporters as a collective, it's that there isn't a stereotypical supporter.

As to 10%, who knows what RP might get if people took the time to read his own words (there are plenty of them) instead of bashing his supporters or falling for whatever the MSM puts in front of them.

    2. Pretty weak argument. I worked on nuclear reactors for the navy, I go to school, I work, and I have never done a drug except alcohol. Most Ron Paul fans are highly educated and highly realistic. So to more important matters, what about Ron Paul do you actually not like. Because insulting me and other fans is a pretty shallow argument. Name what you dislike about him, and bring up a better contender. If you want the federal reserve manipulating your money, if you want to continue to be forced to buy into the ponzi scheme that is social securtiy, or if you want to keep our troops in the middle east(putting their lives in jeopardy and wasting our money), then I guess Ron Paul isn't your man.

      1. It appears that only the intelligent people seem to understand that Ron is the solution to this whole mess. That reality man, i'm so sorry you don't get it.

        1. People will get it. There is a war for the minds of the people if you haven't noticed. More people are waking up than ever before. We can win if people don't just give up. I remember a little less than four years ago I was a naive conservative whose main argument point was that radical Islam wanted us dead and the patriot act saved us. I sounded just like a Pawlenty or a Santorum. If I saw through the garbage, why not everyone else?

  14. The Federal Reserve not only needs to be audited, it needs to be abolished. It is the 5th plank of the Communist Manifesto. It is the true cause of our economic problems and puts generations to come in debt. Herman Cain sat on the board of the Kansas City Fed Bank.

  15. If someone violates their oath to the constitution, they cease to be a choice at all. There for the only logical choice for me is Ron Paul 2012

  16. I am glad I am not the only one that was disgusted by the fabricated pre-orchestrated "focus group" of Frank Luntz after the debate. Everyone that I watched the debate with agreed that Ron Paul was the clear winner of the debate, and that Cain finished in the middle of the pack at best. When they showed the focus group giving their scripted responses about how amazing Cain was, I was so shocked and dumfounded I nearly puked. My suspicions were only reaffirmed when videos came out that the "focus group" did in fact consist of paid actors that were previously used by Frank Luntz. This is a disgrace, and Luntz should be fired. Shame on you Fox News. Ron Paul won fair and square. By the way, how many times does Ron Paul have to win your online poll before you stop dumping the results and starting over? If you insist on cheating, why dont you just fabricate the results of the poll too so that you can say Herman Cain won?

  17. Cain did quite well.

  36. Can't believe I'm saying this – Ron Paul is ready for prime time.

He's the only Rep candidate a lot of Dems could live with.

Problem is – he doesn't tell you what you want to hear – this guy doesn't lie – no matter how unpopular his answer.

Never took him seriously until last night.

      1. We are at a crossroads, Medusa I acprepiate your due diligence and spirit but I must be getting on with other stories and look forward to your comments in the future. But the reality is that for at least the next 15 months, we will be a part of the UN and likely will remain a part of the UN and NATO long after 2012, regardless of who comes to power even if Paul were to somehow catch fire and win the hearts of every conservative in America. You raised the question what will neocons do with this piece of information and the reality is they will deal with it in terms of geopolitics and actively work to support Israel. My contention is that both Obama and Ron Paul would actively work to disengage from supporting Israel and would justify it using punch points and zingers about how America is overextended and everything we are doing is with borrowed money. Does a weakened Israel serve America’s National Interest? That is the question I pose. Ron Paul argues that a nuclear Iran is no more of a threat than a Nuclear Russia but this argument assumes Iran is a rational player. I do not assume Iran or any Islamic Supremacist outfit Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah, Hamas, Al Qaeda, Hizb ut Tahrir et al. are rational players. The neocon argument against a nuclear armed Iran, the neocon argument against a weakened Israeli ally, the neocon argument against radical Islam should not be dismissed out of a willful blindness in hopes of saving a few nickels, or scoring points against a lobbyist or two, when what is necessary to balance the budget and win the future is placing the American economy into overdrive and generating trillions of dollars in revenue by creating a low tax, pro-business, pro-capitalist environment. We cannot afford a nuclear-armed Iran. We cannot afford an emboldened Islamic Supremacist hegemony in the Middle East. These are my opinions, and I am sure you have yours; but, in the end, I believe we will have to disagree, knowing that we will in all probability vote for Rick Perry or Mitt Romney to stop the Obama freight train of despair and punishment.

  39. Thanks for the post, by the way, I found your post from Google’s and so gladden even the first time out on your blog!

    1. I am also a Ron Paul supporter. Here is my terhoy on what is happening.Ron Paul has a better network of enthused supporters that watch what he does and what people say about him a great deal more than the established candidates that ignore what a few bloggers think. I myself check Google News every day to get the latest Paul update and constantly discuss online Paul’s views to help win more supporters. I do not game the system, but I do vote in every online poll because I want to voice my opinion. I do not think Paul supporters do anything different than what I do, but I can’t speak for everybody and I’m sure every campaign suffers a few morons. The key is Paul’s message of liberty and small government and I will not be swayed by the lesser of two evils jargon that the majors put out when talking about themselves vs. the democratic candidates. I will voice my opinion that Paul should be president even after he fails to be nominated because I am not about to submit to tyranny and neither should any other voter. Vote what you believe in or don’t vote at all.

  44. I’ve been browsing on-line more than 3 hours as of late, yet I by no means found any fascinating article like yours. It is beautiful value sufficient for me. 1. This means that Digg users that support Ron Paul aren’t just romnal Digg users; they are Ron Paul supporters that try to game these sites by getting people to sign up for accounts, not to use Digg romnally, but exclusively to promote Ron Paul stories. This is exactly what I was talking about the myth of the romnal Digg user. There is no difference between someone who diggs a story about Ron Paul because they like Ron Paul and a person who diggs yet another story about the IPhone because they like Apple. The claim that some preferences are genuine and some are not just doesn’t hold any water with me. If Digg has an algorithm that weights the votes of its members, that should provide more than enough balance to the social media system.I will say that I think as more people get involved in social media and it stops being an extreme niche market, the algorithmic system will break down as it gets swamped by sheer quantity. If that happens with a site like Digg, we’ll then see if they’re really social media at all. I tend to think not, since the entire Ron Paul incident has shown how readily the early adopters of Digg will turn on newcomers who aren’t real members, if their interests happen to not correspond to those of the early adopters.

  49. I am really impressed along with your writing talents and also with the structure in your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it your self? Anyway stay up the excellent high quality writing, it is uncommon to see a great weblog like this one today..

    1. I’ve been seeing csdsuision of this issue everywhere, and it seems moronic to me.I’d like someone to explain to me the difference between manipulating a story into popularity and the story authentically gaining popularity.Unless dualies are in use, a manipulated story and an authentic story get their Diggs in exactly the same way multiple Digg users Digg the story. The entire argument that the system is being gamed relies on an absolutely untenable theory that there’s somehow such a thing as disinterested interest e.g. there’s a group of users who are authentic Digg users who quite disinterestedly recommend stories to other authentic Digg users, and that it’s somehow possible for other users to express their preferences in a manner which violates this holy gentlemanly amateurness . It’s idiotic and a fantasy, and relies on specious, subjective, and unprovable distinctions.I realize people point to Digg’s terms of service, which mention collusion , but that’s idiotic as well. By definition if more than one person Diggs an article, they have colluded. Apparently some collusion is more equal than others, apparently if you first hear about an article at freerepublic and come to Digg and Digg it, you’re colluding, but if you see an article in Upcoming Stories and Digg it, you aren’t. It’s nonsense.
